Discovering Magic in the Ordinary

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

"Our lives are a downward spiraling. This might seem odd to you, as you value progress and think it’s about looking up. But what could be more beautiful than a marble rolling seamlessly on every track, through every tunnel…"

In literary studies, authorial intention often takes a back seat to what the text does for the reader. As a scholar, I wholeheartedly embrace this perspective. However, I'd like to take a moment to share how I approach my writing, the influences that shape my work, and the underlying thoughts guiding my choices.

To be clear, I won't dissect my texts; that would defeat the purpose. Instead, I'll offer you a taste of what my writing embodies, allowing you to decide if it resonates with you. Now, I won't divulge who makes this confession shared above. But here's what I hope my work will achieve — not greatness, but a sense of humility. I want to convey the magic inherent in the ordinary, a concept that brings to mind a song I've cherished since my teenage years: "Ordinary Miracle" by Sarah McLachlan.

It's no coincidence that you'll encounter references to children, childhood games, and similar themes throughout my work. Children are the finest teachers when it comes to discovering magic in the everyday, finding awe in simple things.

"Simplicity." It's a word I hold dear.

What are some simple things that bring joy to your life? Is it that morning cup of coffee or the gentle touch of the morning sun? Share your thoughts — I'd love to hear them!
